The ALERTDRIVER/TAA SELF STUDY PROGRAM HAS 7 INTERACTIVE, EASY STEPS

1.
Drivers start with a confidential on-line assessment of their beliefs, attitudes and behaviors relevant to driving. This highly successful program component has been used by a North Carolina District Traffic Court for over 2 years. The driver logs in with a secure password and completes a short on-line survey before instruction begins.
This highly successful program component has been used by a North Carolina District Traffic Court for over 2 years. The driver logs in with a secure password and completes a short on-line survey before instruction begins. The survey items are from the scientific literature on driving. These survey responses are the basis for feedback to the driver about important changes that take place over the course of instruction.
Your organization may have other items that are more specific to your drivers’ problems, such as fatigue, back pain, shift work or neurological disorders. The AlertDriver program can modify the initial on-line survey to meet your needs.

2.
Drivers are exposed to a popular on-line interactive video about driver inattention, demonstrating “the 2 second rule.” The video is supported by bumper stickers and company posters after the course is over.

3.
Drivers take The Attention Assessment (TAA). TAA is an exclusive computerized assessment ONLY available as a part of the program. TAA measures 16 dimensions of a driver’s scanning and decision making abilities.

Because TAA gives precise, normative scores (drivers are compared to others in their age group), each driver must be administered the test at a central office location. We can train an on-site administrator in less than 30 minutes. It takes only about half an hour to get a complete profile on each driver. More important, each driver receives detailed feedback on his/her scanning and decision making skills that can be put into practice immediately on the road. (All scores are confidential.)

4.
Each driver receives a copy of “Disciplined Attention, How to Improve Your Visual Attention When you Drive”, by Dr. Ken Mills. The short, easy to read book presents the latest scientific evidence on visual attention and offers practical tips from professional drivers on how to remain visually alert on the road. Each participant receives their own copy of the hardcover book.

5.
After reading Disciplined Attention, the driver makes an appointment to be retested on TAA at a convenient time. Testing only takes about ½ hour, and each driver receives a personal tracking record on how can improve. TAA gives printed color feedback charts. The drivers’ receive a detailed PROFILE of how
well they scan in 4 directions, how well they scan the periphery, and how well they make rapid decisions. Drivers also find out how they rate among other drivers in their age group. (Drivers can log on anytime to improve their skills.)

6.
Each driver then logs on and takes a follow-up survey of attitudes toward attention on the road. Each driver receives both individual and normative feedback on the changes that improve safety on the highway. Optionally, the driver may take an exam on the Disciplined Attention textbook.

7.
Each successful driver receives an AlertDriver Certificate of Completion, a bumper sticker of his/her choice, and most importantly, a TAA golf hat. Your organization receives an Award for Participation and posters for the workplace.
