7 INTERACTIVE, EASY STEPS

ALERTDRIVER is the national pioneer in data-based driver training. Drivers in a court referral program are the first in the nation to receive before/after feedback on how the course changed their attitudes and behaviors about distracted and aggressive driving on the road. The course receives rave reviews from over 80% of court-referred clients!
The data-based feedback is completely integrated with the scientific material presented in the instructional course. Students learn about the dynamics of visual attention from the point of view of both scientists and professional driving instructors. Then, the advice of professionals is compared real-time to personalized experiences in the course.
Senior drivers receive the added benefit that they can take ALERTDRIVER’S proprietary test of visual attention (TAA) and receive immediate feedback on how well and how fast they respond to hazards in all areas of their dynamic visual field.
Normative data from global research provide age comparisons for the seniors. The TAA feedback is thoroughly integrated with seminar and course material. Many older drivers appreciate clear, precise feedback on their limitations and how to improve. TAA showed one older driver with Parkinson’s that he was not scanning up. He realized he was having trouble with overhead lights and stop signs and wanted to repeat TAA. He did—30 times!!! (Drivers can log on anytime to improve their scanning skills.)

THE SENIOR PROGRAM
Modern research now shows that inattention is the leading cause of motor vehicle crashes among drivers of all ages. Declining visual attention skills, for a variety of reasons, are also the primary cause of crashes for drivers 65 and older.

The ALERTDRIVER Senior program 7 steps:
1.
The program kicks off with the popular INTRODUCTORY SEMINAR given by your Occupational Therapist. The 60-90 minute presentation is supported by ALERTDRIVER training with PowerPoints & handouts. The senior driver learns about age-related compromises to visual scene management, precisely how to measure it, and importantly, how to develop new visual/cognitive skills to reduce traffic risk. We train your Occupational Therapist to give an effective seminar.
2.
Senior participants sign up for THE ALERTDRIVER ON-LINE AND TEXT DRIVER IMPROVEMENT COURSE. Drivers start with a confidential on-line assessment of their beliefs, attitudes and behaviors about driving attention skills. This is the basis for individualized feedback about habits on the road. The survey items are extracted from the scientific literature on driving.
3.
EACH DRIVER RECEIVES A COPY OF DISCIPLINED ATTENTION, BY DR. KEN MILLS. The short, easy to read book presents the latest scientific findings on visual attention and offers practical tips on how to remain visually alert on the road. The skills can be used immediately.

OLDER DRIVER’S ESPECIALLY APPRECIATE FEEDBACK ON PERCEPTUAL SKILLS THAT MAY DETERIORATE WITH AGE
4.
Each driver makes an appointment for an interactive 1 hour session taking THE ATTENTION ASSESSMENT (TAA): A COMPUTERIZED ASSESSMENT OF VISUAL SCANNING AND DECISION MAKING SKILLS. TAA gives each user graphical feedback out how well and how fast they scan. Each person’s scores are immediately web-compared with other drivers in their age group.
Plus, each driver can log on and take the 2.5 minutetest as many times as they wish to improve their visual attention skills. TAA is used globally by pharmaceutical researchers to precisely measure the impairing or enhancing effect of drugs on driving skills. TAA has a long history of peer-reviewed publications (taatest.com).
5.
After reading Disciplined Attention, the driver makes an appointment to be retested on TAA at a convenient time. Testing only takes about ½ hour. THE DRIVERS’ RECEIVE A DETAILED PROFILE OF THEIR TAA LEARNING CURVE…. ALL THROUGH PRINTED COLOR GRAPHICS.
Drivers also find out how they rate among other drivers in their age group.
6.
Each driver then logs on and takes a follow-up survey of attitudes and behaviors toward attention on the road. EACH DRIVER RECEIVES INDIVIDUALIZED FEEDBACK ON THE CHANGES THAT IMPROVE SAFETY ON THE HIGHWAY. Optionally, the driver may take a scored exam on the Disciplined Attention textbook.
7.
EACH SUCCESSFUL DRIVER RECEIVES AN ALERTDRIVER CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION. Your organization also receives an Award for Participation and posters for the senior center emphasizing the key safety principles from assessment and training.

ALZHEIMER'S AND PARKINSON'S SUBJECTS SCORE BELOW THE NORM; MORE RESEARCH IS INDICATED

Older drivers with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s scored well below the norms for their age group on TAA. While the sample size was small, the results suggest that TAA can detect chronic conditions. Download the report at taatest.com:

TAA is not a diagnostic tool for neurological disorders. Further research is indicated.
